The Open Journalism Workshop

The Open Democracy Advice Centre (ODAC), with generous funding from the Open Society Foundation of South Africa, has created this website as an online resource for South African investigative journalists.

The media environment in South Africa is not always conducive to investigative journalism. South Africa may have a free media, but the political environment presents many challenges in terms of accessing information – particularly information from the state. Within media houses, limited capacity and restrictive deadlines make it difficult to write stories that might require extensive, in-depth investigations.

In response, ODAC has launched this site as a resource for investigative journalists. It is an online workshop with three core modules:

  • Open Data Journalism
  • The Promotion of Access to Information Act
  • The Protected Disclosures Act

Each module provides you with a different tool to assist your investigative journalism. The structure is simple. Each module has a video lecture, an accompanying PowerPoint presentation, and several supplementary reading materials and videos. Each module ends with a short voluntary quiz which tests you on the core material.

  1. Hi guys i am a Journalism student and would love get an opportunity in this workshop. What do i do to get in the workshop.

    • Hi Ricardo – thanks for dropping in! The workshop consists of these online resources only as a form of self-study and you are free to use it at any stage. Unfortunately, it is not associated to any academic institution for certification – but the skills covered in the videos and text resources will give you some practical skills for dealing with the SA media environment. We hope you find it useful, and if you have any questions drop us a mail and we’ll try and respond as soon as we can. All the best!

  2. Hi there thanks for the information, hope to be part of lecture. Am a Ghananian Journalist , What are the requirements ?
Would Like to know the time and date slated for de lecture hours and the period it will end. After this lecture what next?
I hope it will broaden my horizon and improve upon my confidence as a journalist bcos delvin into investigative , in depth stories involves a lot.
Thanks and hope to hear from you

    • Hi Leticia – thanks so much for your interest and sorry about the late reply! All the materials are available for your use at any time. There are no requirements, just click on the lecture videos and have a peak when its most convenient for you. I would just advise that you’ll probably find the most use out of the materials on open data journalism; the material on using the South African access to information law and whistleblower protection law won’t have much application for you (though it might be of interest generally!). All the best, ODAC
